Promoter Eddie Hearn is of the opinion that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is still the face of boxing, despite some saying that it is Gervonta Davis, who sold 1.2 million pay-per-view buys in his fight against Ryan Garcia. Hearn questioned this claim in an interview with Seconds Out, stating: “They want to put him as the face of boxing for one fight against Ryan Garcia. What had Tank Davis done in his previous pay-per-view fights? 60,000, 70,000, 100,000, 150,000. (Tank) fought in one of the biggest fights in boxing against one of the biggest names in boxing, Ryan Garcia, and collectively they did very well.”
While acknowledging that Davis is a great fighter, Hearn believes that there are other factors to consider when determining the face of boxing. “What matters is the dollars in the bank,” he asserts. “That’s when you talk about the face of boxing, that’s when you talk about the biggest star in boxing, and that’s Canelo Alvarez time and time again.”
Hearn also points out that consistency is key to being the face of boxing, stating, “Please stop talking about the new this or the new that. Canelo has done it consistently. He’s earning three or four times more than anyone on the pound-for-pound list, perhaps with the exception of Anthony Joshua, who isn’t even on the pound-for-pound list at the moment. This guy (Canelo) is the face of boxing.”
While Hearn acknowledges that it’s good for the sport to have new stars emerge in boxing, he emphasizes the importance of consistency in their prominence. “All these guys that are coming up (as stars), like Tank, we need them to keep coming,” he says.
Hearn thinks Canelo is in another level
“Believe me, they’re tremendous fighters. But Canelo is on another level. Tank is a huge star, but what this guy (Canelo) has done consistently over the years is incredible.”
Hearn’s comments came after Davis’s recent fight against Mario Barrios, which saw him win by knockout in the eleventh round. While Davis’s victory was impressive, Hearn is clear that consistency and long-term success are key when it comes to being the face of boxing.
