Chakas Named Big West Player of the Week For Third Time
IRVINE, Calif. – University of Hawai’i outside hitter Spyros Chakas was named Big West Player of the Week for the third time this season after leading the Rainbow Warriors to a pair of victories over No. 7 Pepperdine last week.
The Nea Smyrni, Greece native averaged 4.71 kills per set, hitting .547 in the two matches. He also averaged a team-best 1.86 digs per set and tallied four aces. In Wednesday’s four-set win, he led team with 18 kills, hitting .516, with a career-high 12 digs and two aces for his second double-double of the season. Two nights later, he tallied a match-high 15 kills, hitting .591 with two aces and two blocks.
Chakas leads the team with a 4.23 kills per set average which ranks No. 4 nationally. His .418 hitting percentage ranks No. 11.
The Greek was previously named Player of the Week following UH’s series sweeps of Ball State and Concordia. AVCA National Player of the Week award will be announced on Tuesday.
Chakas and the Rainbow Warriors will host the 27th OUTRIGGER Invitational Thursday, March 9 through Saturday, March 11 at SimpliFi Arena. The three-day, round-robin tournament features No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Penn State, and Purdue Fort Wayne.
